The Africa e Mediterraneo association in partnership with the Senegalese organisations CAEM (Consultants Associés pour l’Education aux Média) and Atelier Fons, organised for the project “Africa Comics: the development of African comics as a gateway for communication and cultural exchange with Senegal” a comics exhibition, an international conference and a workshop in Dakar. These activities were included in the OFF program of the Dak’art Biennale 2006.
The workshop, headed by comics’ experts from Italy and Senegal, has been realised between the 8th and the 12th May in a room near the exhibition’s hall, in order for the students to easily use the comics exposed as an inspiration. During the workshop, there has been a theoretical and technical part and a widely elaborated creative and practical part. Particularly, the workshop has reached its purposes thanks to the intercultural collaboration among the different teachers: Maurizio Ribichini, Manuel De Carli, TT Fons, Modibo Diawara e Samba Ndar Cisse. Organizing the workshop in this dialogical and intercultural way has permitted the participants to be aware of the universal power of comics , which are capable of representing local features using independently the same techniques all over the world.
The workshop has been addressed to young cartoonists who have already had previous experiences in the creation of comics strips or who have published one or more comics before.
Fourteen students have participated in this workshop, and nine of them have completed the course and produced their own comics stories.
